Who We Are

Started in 2008, the Gandhi Fellowship is a 23-month leadership journey initiated by the Piramal Foundation to build young leaders for India.

Gandhi Fellows work closely with government systems and communities across the country to strengthen public services in education, health, water, digitization, and climate action.

For over two decades, the fellowship has enabled young people to transform themselves, discover who they truly are, understand India beyond textbooks, and lead change where it truly matters.

This is not just a fellowship program. It is a life-shaping leadership experience.

What Fellows Do

target

Work on real,
on-ground challenges

Fellows engage with complex, real-world problems in education, health, governance, and community systems. This work is not simulated decisions and actions influence lives, public resources, and outcomes at scale.

pencil

Build skills that go
beyond the social sector

Through this work, fellows develop capabilities that apply across careers:

These skills are as valuable in consulting, policy, startups, corporate leadership, and entrepreneurship as they are in social impact roles.

handshake

Collaborate across
systems

Fellows work with government officers, educators, administrators, and community leaders. This enables a deeper understanding of how large systems function, how change unfolds, and how influence can be exercised responsibly.

solution

Design solutions that
strengthen systems

Rather than focusing on short-term fixes, fellows design and implement interventions that improve system performance over time. This builds long-term thinking, solution structuring, and outcome-driven execution.

growth

Grow through experience
and reflection

The fellowship integrates hands-on work with structured reflection. Fellows grow in self-awareness and leadership clarity, building a professional identity that extends across sectors.

Why Join the Gandhi Fellowship

The Gandhi Fellowship equips fellows with deep system-level understanding, life skills, and real-world experience.

Whether fellows choose public policy, social impact, entrepreneurship, or any professional field, the perspective gained here stays with you for life.

Fellows graduate not just with experience, but with the ability to lead in complexity, uncertainty, and change.

The Gandhi Fellowship transformed my life and helped me become a more empathetic journalist. Working in rural Rajasthan, I learned to listen deeply, solve problems, and collaborate with communities, which later helped me work with top newspapers like The Times of India and The Indian Express. The fellowship’s experience paved the way for my admission to Columbia Journalism School and equipped me to build startups like Aawaaz and Know Your World. I’m grateful for the leadership and resilience it instilled in me.

I believe in living with positivity, optimism, and a clear vision to create meaningful impact. As a Gandhi Fellowship (Batch 6) alumna, my perspective on service, leadership, and nation-building was deeply shaped through grassroots experiences. From community work to corporate social responsibility, my journey has strengthened my belief that purpose-driven action can uplift communities, foster harmony, and build a lasting legacy of compassion and justice.
