From fear to curiosity, cynicism to change, ideas to action

Be a dreamer. Be a leader. Be a Gandhi Fellow

Who We Are

In 2008, the Piramal Foundation started a 23-month fully residential program, primarily to develop contemporary leadership competencies in the youth of India. The endeavour was to foster generations of young Indians who would build cultures, not just products. Beyond harvesting outcomes, they would cultivate people and be role models beyond work. Practical idealists, gritty poets, social hermits, gentle rebels, action heroes… we wanted them all because the 21st century world needs them all. That today is the Gandhi Fellowship Program – an opportunity for the conscientious and committed young people to familiarize themselves with the country’s most pressing problems – and come out leaders at the other end.

The program selects the best from among the inspired and inventive young people from India’s top universities and puts them through a 4-semester grassroots immersion curriculum. Through a unique pedagogy of action-reflection-sharing, they acquire the skills of critical thinking, patience, humility, empathy, enterprise and most importantly, reflection.

What started with 11 Fellows in one state is today a Fellowship of 3000 plus Alumni across the world working in spaces as diverse as the development sector, corporates, governments and social enterprises.

Rooted In Values,
Driven By Passion

Democracy
The GFP accepts that Representational Democracy is the best system known as yet. The program stands on the side of evolution – that well thought systemic effort is the way to change. The GFP does not in any way support ideologies and practices that fight against the democratic system.
Constitution
To build democracy, the GFP subscribes and prescribes to the values of the Indian Constitution.
Constructivism
GFP cultivates proactive leaders who are constructivists. They are individuals who are solution-focused and ready to walk the mile. It’s about channelling activism into constructive change.
Collaboration
GFP shapes self-awareness to prioritize teamwork and growth. We believe that collaboration is key for excellent execution, making a collective impact.
Non-violent Communication
In a world of conflict and miscommunication, non-violent communication is the key is the most difficult path to bring change management.
Influence without authority
Real change thrives on belief, not authority alone. Fellows on ground inspire and influence, not just enforce. To ensure policy change initiatives our fellows believe in influencing our ecosystems without being authoritative.
